The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park extends 8.2 kilometres beneath the Saint Paul Mountain Range, though only 4.3 kilometres remain navigable by paddle boat.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, the limestone karst landscape shelters one of the planet's longest underground river systems, a tidal estuary that meets the South China Sea inside a cathedral-sized cavern. Geologists estimate the cave complex formed over five million years as tectonic uplift raised ancient seabeds into mountain ranges, later dissolved by acidic rainwater into chambers and sinkholes.
The river mouth opens at Sabang Beach, a coastal barangay 81 kilometres northwest of Puerto Princesa city and 215 kilometres south of El Nido by road. Most visitors approaching from northern Palawan face a five-hour van journey along the national highway, threading through rainforest and coconut plantations before descending to the mangrove-fringed coast. The protected area covers 22,202 hectares of old-growth forest, home to Philippine cockatoos, Palawan hornbills, and monitor lizards that patrol the tidal mudflats. Eight bat species roost in the cave's interior, their guano deposits supporting an endemic ecosystem of invertebrates found nowhere else on earth.
Inside, the main chamber rises 80 metres at its apex, its ceiling punctured by natural skylights that admit shafts of equatorial sun. Paddle boats carry visitors 1.5 kilometres into the darkness, past formations named for their resemblance to cathedrals, vegetables, and holy figures. The river itself flows at 0.8 metres per second during dry season, its brackish water hosting blind cave fish and freshwater crabs. Audio guides narrate the geology in eight languages, explaining how stalactites grow one cubic centimetre per century. The 500-peso entrance fee supports trail maintenance and wildlife monitoring, while daily visitor limits preserve the cave's delicate microclimate. Tours depart Sabang port between eight in the morning and two in the afternoon, timed to avoid afternoon squalls that obscure the coastal approach.
